Top Ten Fasting Myths Debunked (Major Update Nov 4th). Or . That would have fit almost as well. Ok, so in retrospect, I think I screwed up on the title. Many myths just happened to be connected to intermittent fasting (meal frequency, breakfast skipping, etc.). Well, live and learn. November 4th Addendum: Section added at the end of the article. Everyone who learns about nutrition through the usual channels, be it fitness magazines, mainstream diet books and forums, gets cursed with the prevailing belief system of what constitutes a good diet. Though specific dietary recommendations vary slightly depending on who you listen to, there are many common denominators and . Call it broscience, incompetence or ignorance, same thing. We've all been there and we've all followed these rules. Led like sheep, not knowing better. Trusting that those we listen to knew what they were talking about. While these dietary myths run rampant in the bodybuilding and fitness community, you'll find that many are being endlessly propagated in the mainstream as well. Upon closer scrutiny, the great majority lack scientific basis. They are born out out of half- truths, faulty conclusions drawn from poorly conducted studies or created when a study gets cited out of context. Sometimes, what's claimed is even in exact opposition to what really occurs at a physiological level. Many people believe that alcohol is fattening, more so than any other macronutrient. Yet, if you look at how inefficiently the body converts ethanol to fat, you'll find that it's completely backwards. I talked about this in . Also note how the proposed negative effect of alcohol on muscle growth doesn't even exist in the scientific literature. You'll see similar examples in this article. For example, in short- term fasting, it's often claimed that metabolic rate slows down - yet looking at the studies, the opposite is true. The myths I'll debunk today are being kept alive by: 1. Repeat something often enough and it becomes the truth. If everyone is saying the same thing, it must be true. No need to look into it and think for yourself. The fact that bodybuilders and fitness celebrities keep propagating these myths doesn't help either. Most people reason that if these people do it, it must be great. Unfortunately, bodybuilders and fitness celebrities might just be one of the last people on earth you should listen to if you want objective and accurate opinions in nutrition. For example, the supplement industry benefits greatly from people believing that frequent feedings provide a metabolic advantage. People don't have time to eat six cooked meals a day. Instead, they turn to meal replacement powders, shakes and protein bars. The cereal and grain industry benefits by preaching about the virtues of breakfast for weight control, health and fat loss. There's no commercial incentive in telling people that they would do just fine with three squares a day. Few people have the knowledge or interest needed to interpret the scientific evidence and draw their own conclusions. In order to do this you would need an academic background that included critical examination of studies and study methodology as part of the learning process. However, an academic background, or an extensive education in nutrition or physiology, seems to correlate very poorly with truthfulness and objectivity in the field of dietetics in my experience. The advice and claims I have seen made by many RDs (Registered Dietitians) has been so shamelessly wrong that I put little stock in anything they have to say. The same goes for many . Perhaps they lose interest in keeping up with research. What we know today is a bit different from what we knew twenty years ago after all. Or maybe they're afraid that their credibility would be questioned if they change the advice they have been giving for years. I've been thinking about it quite a bit. Back to the topic. The top ten fasting myths debunked. The dietary recommendations and advice given in mainstream media and most fora will have you believe that fasting is a hazardous practice. On top of wrecking your metabolism, you should expect ravenous hunger, fat gain, muscle loss, and severe mental impairment. Or so you are told. Needless to say, people who are introduced to Leangains and the intermittent fasting diet concept have many fears that will make them think twice before embracing it. Fears grounded in years of a dietary indoctrination based on faulty ideas and lies. We've all been there. I've listed the ten most common fasting and diet myths that exist to make people resistant to intermittent fasting. I've explained why they're wrong and linked out to references and other resources for those who would like to read a more detailed review of the issues. I've also listed their origins, or what I believe to be their origins. I've dealt with each myth many times before on this site but it would be good to have everything in one place. Even if you've been following me for a while, you'll find some new information here I haven't discussed in the past. It's a long read but it'll be worth your while. Myth: Eat frequently to . Paradoxically, it takes energy to break down and absorb energy. This is the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF). The amount of energy expended is directly proportional to the amount of calories and nutrients consumed in the meal. Let's assume that we are measuring TEF during 2. We run three different trials where the only thing we change is the the meal frequency. A) Three meals: 9. B) Six meals: 4. 50 kcal per meal. C) Nine meals: 3. What we'd find is a different pattern in regards to TEF. The total amount of energy expended by TEF would be identical in each scenario. Meal frequency does not affect total TEF. It looked at many different studies that compared TEF during meal frequencies ranging from 1- 1. For a summary of the above cited study, read this research review by Lyle Mc. Donald. Earlier this year, a new study was published on the topic. As expected, no differences were found between a lower (3 meals) and higher meal (6 meals) frequency. Read this post for my summary of the study. This study garnered some attention in the mass media and it was nice to see the meal frequency myth being debunked in The New York Times. Origin. Seeing how conclusive and clear research is on the topic of meal frequency, you might wonder why it is that some people, quite often RDs in fact, keep repeating the myth of . My best guess is that they've somehow misunderstood TEF. After all, they're technically right to say you keep your metabolism humming along by eating frequently. They just missed that critical part where it was explained that TEF is proportional to the calories consumed in each meal. Another guess is that they base the advice on some epidemiological studies that found an inverse correlation between high meal frequency and body weight in the population. What that means is that researchers may look at the dietary pattern of thousands individuals and find that those who eat more frequently tend to weigh less than those who eat less frequently. It's important to point out that these studies are uncontrolled in terms of calorie intake and are done on Average Joes (i. Just because there's a connection between low meal frequencies and higher body weights, doesn't mean that low meal frequencies cause weight gain. Those studies likely show that people who tend to eat less frequently have: * Dysregulated eating patterns; the personality type that skips breakfast in favor of a donut in the car on the way to work, undereat during the day, and overeat in the evening. They tend to be less concerned with health and diet than those who eat more frequently.* Another feasible explanation for the association between low meal frequencies and higher body weight is that meal skipping is often used as a weight loss strategy. People who are overweight are more likely to be on a diet and eat fewer meals. The connection between lower meal frequency and higher body weight in the general population, and vice versa, is connected to behavioral patterns - not metabolism. Myth: Eat smaller meals more often for hunger control. Truth. Given the importance of finding the most favorable meal pattern for hunger and appetite control, there's a surprising scarcity of studies on the topic. The most widely cited study is one where obese males were fed 3. However, the single meal was now split into five smaller meals, which were consumed every hour leading up to the ad libitum meal. The results showed that subjects undergoing . The same setup was used by the same researchers on lean males and showed similar results. However, upon closer scrutiny it's clear how little real world application those results have. The macrocomposition of the pre- load was 7. The situation created was highly artificial and abnormal. Who sits around nibbling on pasta and ice cream, sipping orange juice, every hour leading up to a regular meal? The latest research, performed under conditions that more closely resemble a real- world scenario, shows the opposite result. In this study, three high- protein meals lead to greater fullness and appetite control when compared to six high- protein meals. You can read my summary of the study here: Three Meals Superior for Appetite Control. There's no doubt that meal frequency is highly individual. However, absolute statements claiming smaller meals are superior for hunger and appetite control are untrue and are based on studies using methods that greatly differed from real- world meal patterns. Current research with a normal meal pattern and protein intakes that are closer to what can be seen in a typical non- retarded diet, suggests superior appetite control when eating fewer and larger meals. Origin. This myth might have originated from the limited data from studies on meal frequencies and appetite control. ![]() ![]() ![]() Fruitarianism, 8. Some of you know that I've been on a low- carb ketogenic diet for the last 2 years, mostly for health reasons. Before this challenge, my net carbs intake was mostly between 4. After all the delicious festive meals I've had in December, I knew I need to shed a few pounds. That's how this challenge started! Although Ketostix may not be the most accurate, I used them and measured medium to high level of ketones every single day since the challenge. Before this challenge, I had low readings (light pink colour). Keep in mind you won't see the high readings I did, as I was already in ketosis. If you want to get rid of glycogen in order to quickly get in ketosis, eat no more that 2. What also helps is to include moderate exercise during the initial phase to help your body release even more glycogen and start producing ketones. Remember, if you've just recently started following the ketogenic diet, it is very important to have sufficient intake of electrolytes, otherwise you may experience bad . You can use lite salt for potassium, take magnesium supplements and drink bone broth to boost your sodium intake. Now, back to my challenge. The reason is that both of these may impair weight loss and if you are stuck at the same weight for a long time, skipping dairy and avoiding all sorts of low- carb sweets will help you. Initially, I thought it would be really difficult to remove dairy from my diet. Although I'm already keto- adapted, I've never given up dairy in the past. I use cream in my morning coffee and I love cheese and full- fat yogurt with berries. I was actually quite surprised to realise that it's not difficult at all! I still have my coffee but use coconut milk instead of cream. Instead of yogurt, I use ? Exercise has a very small effect on long- term weight loss. In fact, 8. 0- 9. You'll load up on the healthy stuff first. The edges of grocery stores generally house fresh produce, meat, and fish, while the inner aisles hold more pre- packaged, processed foods. During this period, diets and cooking changed less across Europe than they did in the far briefer early modern period that followed, when those changes helped lay the foundations for modern European cuisine. Cereals remained the most important staple during the early Middle Ages as rice was a late introduction to Europe, and the potato was only introduced in 1. Barley, oat and rye among the poor, and wheat for the governing classes, were eaten as bread, porridge, gruel and pasta by all of society's members. Slow transportation and food preservation techniques (based on drying, salting, smoking and pickling) made long- distance trade of many foods very expensive. Because of this, the food of the nobility was more prone to foreign influence than the cuisine of the poor; it was dependent on exotic spices and expensive imports. As each level of society imitated the one above it, innovations from international trade and foreign wars from the 1. ![]() Aside from economic unavailability of luxuries such as spices, decrees outlawed consumption of certain foods among certain social classes and sumptuary laws limited conspicuous consumption among the nouveaux riches. Social norms also dictated that the food of the working class be less refined, since it was believed there was a natural resemblance between one's labour and one's food; manual labour required coarser, cheaper food. A type of refined cooking developed in the late Middle Ages that set the standard among the nobility all over Europe. Common seasonings in the highly spiced sweet- sour repertory typical of upper- class medieval food included verjuice, wine and vinegar in combination with spices such as black pepper, saffron and ginger. These, along with the widespread use of sugar or honey, gave many dishes a sweet- sour flavour. Almonds were very popular as a thickener in soups, stews, and sauces, particularly as almond milk. Dietary norms. Porridge, gruel and later, bread, became the basic food staple that made up the majority of calorie intake for most of the population. From the 8th to the 1. The Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches and their calendars had great influence on eating habits; consumption of meat was forbidden for a full third of the year for most Christians, and all animal products, including eggs and dairy products (but not fish), were generally prohibited during Lent and fast. Additionally, it was customary for all citizens to fast prior to taking the Eucharist, and these fasts were occasionally for a full day and required total abstinence. Both the Eastern and the Western churches ordained that feast should alternate with fast. In most of Europe, Fridays were fast days, and fasting was observed on various other days and periods, including Lent and Advent. Meat, and animal products such as milk, cheese, butter and eggs, were not allowed, only fish. The fast was intended to mortify the body and invigorate the soul, and also to remind the faster of Christ's sacrifice for humanity. The intention was not to portray certain foods as unclean, but rather to teach a spiritual lesson in self- restraint through abstention. During particularly severe fast days, the number of daily meals was also reduced to one. Even if most people respected these restrictions and usually made penance when they violated them, there were also numerous ways of circumventing them, a conflict of ideals and practice summarized by writer Bridget Ann Henisch: It is the nature of man to build the most complicated cage of rules and regulations in which to trap himself, and then, with equal ingenuity and zest, to bend his brain to the problem of wriggling triumphantly out again. Lent was a challenge; the game was to ferret out the loopholes. While animal products were to be avoided during times of penance, pragmatic compromises often prevailed. The choice of ingredients may have been limited, but that did not mean that meals were smaller. Neither were there any restrictions against (moderate) drinking or eating sweets. Banquets held on fish days could be splendid, and were popular occasions for serving illusion food that imitated meat, cheese and eggs in various ingenious ways; fish could be moulded to look like venison and fake eggs could be made by stuffing empty egg shells with fish roe and almond milk and cooking them in coals. While Byzantine church officials took a hard- line approach, and discouraged any culinary refinement for the clergy, their Western counterparts were far more lenient. During Lent, kings and schoolboys, commoners and nobility, all complained about being deprived of meat for the long, hard weeks of solemn contemplation of their sins. At Lent, owners of livestock were even warned to keep an eye out for hungry dogs frustrated by a . Nobles were careful not to eat meat on fast days, but still dined in style; fish replaced meat, often as imitation hams and bacon; almond milk replaced animal milk as an expensive non- dairy alternative; faux eggs made from almond milk were cooked in blown- out eggshells, flavoured and coloured with exclusive spices. In some cases the lavishness of noble tables was outdone by Benedictine monasteries, which served as many as sixteen courses during certain feast days. Exceptions from fasting were frequently made for very broadly defined groups. Since the sick were exempt from fasting, there often evolved the notion that fasting restrictions only applied to the main dining area, and many Benedictine friars would simply eat their fast day meals in what was called the misericord (at those times) rather than the refectory. In a time when famine was commonplace and social hierarchies were often brutally enforced, food was an important marker of social status in a way that has no equivalent today in most developed countries. According to the ideological norm, society consisted of the three estates of the realm: commoners, that is, the working classes. The relationship between the classes was strictly hierarchical, with the nobility and clergy claiming worldly and spiritual overlordship over commoners. Within the nobility and clergy there were also a number of ranks ranging from kings and popes to dukes, bishops and their subordinates, such as priests. One was expected to remain in one's social class and to respect the authority of the ruling classes. Political power was displayed not just by rule, but also by displaying wealth. Nobles dined on fresh game seasoned with exotic spices, and displayed refined table manners; rough laborers could make do with coarse barley bread, salt pork and beans and were not expected to display etiquette. Even dietary recommendations were different: the diet of the upper classes was considered to be as much a requirement of their refined physical constitution as a sign of economic reality. The digestive system of a lord was held to be more discriminating than that of his rustic subordinates and demanded finer foods. The response came in two forms: didactic literature warning of the dangers of adapting a diet inappropriate for one's class. All foodstuffs were also classified on scales ranging from hot to cold and moist to dry, according to the four bodily humours theory proposed by Galen that dominated Western medical science from late Antiquity until the 1. Medieval scholars considered human digestion to be a process similar to cooking. The processing of food in the stomach was seen as a continuation of the preparation initiated by the cook. In order for the food to be properly . Easily digestible foods would be consumed first, followed by gradually heavier dishes. If this regimen were not respected it was believed that heavy foods would sink to the bottom of the stomach, thus blocking the digestion duct, so that food would digest very slowly and cause putrefaction of the body and draw bad humours into the stomach. It was also of vital importance that food of differing properties not be mixed. As the stomach had been opened, it should then be . A meal would ideally begin with easily digestible fruit, such as apples. It would then be followed by vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage, purslane, herbs, moist fruits, light meats, such as chicken or goat kid, with potages and broths. It was popular, and recommended by medical expertise, to finish the meal with aged cheese and various digestives. Food should preferably also be finely chopped, ground, pounded and strained to achieve a true mixture of all the ingredients. White wine was believed to be cooler than red and the same distinction was applied to red and white vinegar. Dieting - Wikipedia. Dieting is the practice of eating food in a regulated and supervised fashion to decrease, maintain, or increase body weight. In other words, it is conscious control or restriction of the diet. A restricted diet is often used by those who are overweight or obese, sometimes in combination with physical exercise, to reduce body weight. Some people follow a diet to gain weight (usually in the form of muscle). Diets can also be used to maintain a stable body weight and improve health. In particular, diets can be designed to prevent or treat diabetes. Diets to promote weight loss can be categorized as: low- fat, low- carbohydrate, low- calorie, very low calorie and more recently flexible dieting. In his 1. 86. 3 pamphlet, Letter on Corpulence, Addressed to the Public, he outlined the details of a particular low- carbohydrate, low- calorie diet that had led to his own dramatic weight loss. He himself was tremendously overweight and would constantly eat large quantities of rich food and drink. He began a meatless diet, taking only milk and vegetables, and soon regained his health. He began publicly recommending his diet for everyone suffering from obesity. In 1. 72. 4, he wrote An Essay of Health and Long Life, in which he advises exercise and fresh air and avoiding luxury foods. It described the benefits of a meat diet for those suffering from diabetes, basing this recommendation on Matthew Dobson's discovery of glycosuria in diabetes mellitus. ![]() In 1. 86. 3, he wrote a booklet called Letter on Corpulence, Addressed to the Public, which contained the particular plan for the diet he had successfully followed. His own diet was four meals per day, consisting of meat, greens, fruits, and dry wine. The emphasis was on avoiding sugar, sweet foods, starch, beer, milk and butter. The Daniel Fast resembles the vegan diet in that it excludes foods of animal origin. Examples include Lent in Christianity; Yom Kippur, Tisha B'av, Fast of Esther, Tzom Gedalia, the Seventeenth of Tamuz, and the Tenth of Tevet in Judaism. Eastern Orthodox Christians fast during specified fasting seasons of the year, which include not only the better- known Great Lent, but also fasts on every Wednesday and Friday (except on special holidays), together with extended fasting periods before Christmas (the Nativity Fast), after Easter (the Apostles Fast) and in early August (the Dormition Fast). Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints (Mormons) generally fast for 2. Sunday of each month. Like Muslims, they refrain from all drinking and eating unless they are children or are physically unable to fast. Fasting is also a feature of ascetic traditions in religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism. Mahayana traditions that follow the Brahma's Net Sutra may recommend that the laity fast . Members of the Baha'i Faith observe a Nineteen Day Fast from sunrise to sunset during March each year. Nutrition. They also agree on the importance of reducing salt intake because foods including snacks, biscuits, and bread already contain ocean- salt, contributing to an excess of salt daily intake. It offers a wide array of personalized options to help individuals make healthy food choices. It also provides advice on physical activity. It is important to know the amount of energy your body is using every day, so that your intake fits the needs of one's personal weight goal. Someone wanting to lose weight would want a smaller energy intake than what they put out. There is increasing research- based evidence that low- fat vegetarian diets consistently lead to healthy weight loss and management, a decrease in diabetic symptoms. The first source to which the body turns is glycogen (by glycogenolysis). Glycogen is a complex carbohydrate, 6. It is created from the excess of ingested macronutrients, mainly carbohydrates. When glycogen is nearly depleted, the body begins lipolysis, the mobilization and catabolism of fat stores for energy. In this process, fats, obtained from adipose tissue, or fat cells, are broken down into glycerol and fatty acids, which can be used to generate energy. The former include Weight Watchers and Peertrainer. The latter include Overeaters Anonymous and groups run by local organizations. These organizations' customs and practices differ widely. Some groups are modelled on twelve- step programs, while others are quite informal. Some groups advocate certain prepared foods or special menus, while others train dieters to make healthy choices from restaurant menus and while grocery- shopping and cooking. Food diary. A 2. 00. During prolonged fasting or very low calorie diets the reduction of blood glucose, the preferred energy source of the brain, causes the body to deplete its glycogen stores. Once glycogen is depleted the body begins to fuel the brain using ketones, while also metabolizing body protein (including but not limited to skeletal muscle) to be used to synthesize sugars for use as energy by the rest of the body. Most experts believe that a prolonged fast can lead to muscle wasting, although some dispute this. The use of short- term fasting, or various forms of intermittent fasting have been used as a form of dieting to circumvent this issue. While there are studies that show the health and medical benefits of weight loss, a study in 2. Finns over an 1. 8- year period showed that weight loss from dieting can result in increased mortality, while those who maintained their weight fared the best. The Nurses' Health Study, an observational cohort study, found that low carbohydrate diets based on vegetable sources of fat and protein are associated with less coronary heart disease. A long term study that monitored 4. Swedish women however suggests that a low carbohydrate- high protein diet, used on a regular basis and without consideration of the nature of carbohydrates or the source of proteins, is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease. A more recent meta- analysis that included randomized controlled trials published after the Cochrane review. These results can be understood because weight loss is mainly governed by daily caloric deficit and not by the particular foods eaten. The diet based around this research is called the Low GI diet. Low glycemic index foods, such as lentils, provide a slower, more consistent source of glucose to the bloodstream, thereby stimulating less insulin release than high glycemic index foods, such as white bread. Thus the authors concluded that the high- carbohydrate, low- glycemic index diet was the most favorable. A meta- analysis by the Cochrane Collaboration concluded that low glycemic index or low glycemic load diets led to more weight loss and better lipid profiles. However, the Cochrane Collaboration grouped low glycemic index and low glycemic load diets together and did not try to separate the effects of the load versus the index. Retrieved 2. 9 November 2. This is literally everything you need to know, so you might as well read it the way it was meant to be read. You'll be happy you did. All the tips, all the articles, all the methods.. Here now, is that fact. Your body requires a certain number of calories per day in order to maintain your current weight. This is known as your calorie maintenance level. It's the number of calories required by your body to do everything it needs to do (intense exercise, brushing your teeth, pumping blood, keeping organs functioning properly, etc.). Calories are what our bodies use for energy, so in order to do what needs to be done, a certain number of calories are needed. If we end up consuming exactly the same number of calories that our bodies need each day, our weight would remain exactly the same. For example, if your calorie maintenance level was 2. All of the calories you take in would end up getting used (or . This is how you maintain your weight, by giving your body only the calories that it needs. So, for example, if your maintenance level was 2. You are giving your body more calories than it would end up burning. This is what causes weight gain. This is what causes weight loss. Sticking with the same example as before, if your daily maintenance level is 2. Consume more calories than your body needs/burns and you gain weight. And last but not least.. It is the one fact that practically all tips, hacks, methods and diets are based on.. Knowing and understanding it is the key. Just in case any of above was confusing, this article will most likely clear it all up. If your body needs 2. Doing this consistently will cause weight loss. As I mentioned before, your daily calorie maintenance level is the number of calories that your body burns per day. So, for example, if your daily maintenance level is 2. Because all 2. 50. There is no surplus and there is no deficit. A caloric deficit = weight loss. If you then burn an additional 5. Just like the deficit created if you consumed 5. Studies have shown that people who utilize both diet and exercise were more often able to maintain their weight loss long term than those who did one or the other. Doing both is also more beneficial from a general health standpoint as well. If you're the type of person who just wants a clear- cut answer, here it comes.. This can be done through diet, exercise, or for best results, both. The next thing you'll need to know is what your daily calorie maintenance level actually is. Your BMR is the number of calories that your body burns at rest to do all of the things it needs to do to keep you alive and functioning properly. Your activity level is also factored in to estimate how many other calories you burn per day in addition to your BMR. The answer given is the total of the two and should be, for most people, a pretty close estimate of your daily calorie maintenance level. Good, because that's what we're about to do. Now that you have a good estimate of your daily calorie maintenance level, it's time for the fun part. Let's call this first part . To do this, it's going to require a fairly simple 3 step experiment.. Be as consistent as you can. If your maintenance level was 2. Just get as close to 2. Of course, if a food lists the calorie content right there on the package, you can just use that instead.). Do this for a week or two (or three). Here's how: The One Fact Adjustment. Did you end up maintaining your weight? To lose weight, start consuming 5. If your maintenance level was 3. Whatever it was, subtract about 5. Doing so will put you in a caloric deficit (you'll be 5. One Fact is happening. Translation: Weight loss will now happen. Weight loss will still happen. Whether the estimated maintenance level was too high or you just miscalculated the number of calories you consumed, it doesn't really matter. Just start consuming 5. The One Fact Experiment all over again with this new amount. If you maintained weight, you would follow the above instructions. If you lost weight, you would follow the instructions below.). Did you end up losing weight at the rate of about 1- 2 pounds per week? The One Fact is happening, and weight loss is happening at the ideal expert- recommended rate. A pound or two lost per week is perfect. Continue consuming this number of calories every day from this point on. If you fit into that category and are losing weight at this speed, you can probably ignore this. However, to play it safe, you can definitely still follow the instructions below anyway. There is a simple solution. Depending on what your weight does this time, follow the necessary One Fact Adjustment instructions. The above method uses just diet to get it done. This is a perfectly fine way to do it. However, it could get done just the same with exercise (albeit, a bit tougher). To do that, you'd just have to burn 5. For example, you could consume 2. AND burn 2. 50 more calories per day. A 5. 00 calorie deficit is still made. This method will cause weight loss at the rate of about 1 pound per week (more on that below). Then, I'd recommend adding in a few days of exercise per week on top of that. This will most likely result in close to a second pound lost per week. This means the combination of the two will result in 2 pounds lost per week, which is absolutely perfect from both a weight loss stand point and an overall health stand point. It is in my opinion and the opinion of most qualified experts the ideal way to lose weight. You want to lose weight faster than that. We all wish we could drop 2. Not only that, but attempting to lose weight faster than the above recommendation can actually be quite harmful to your health. The human body was just not designed for . At this point it will actually start to KEEP body fat as a precaution. If you go on some stupid unsafe starvation diet, your body's only real instinct is survival, and one of the first things your body may do in this situation is keep your body fat and burn muscle for energy instead. As you can imagine, this would not be a good thing. Health risks aside, studies have also shown that people who lose weight too quickly were MUCH more likely to regain it all back. That may not sound like much, but if you really think about it, it is. Do it consistently for a year, and you could lose 5. Do it for a month and you could lose 4- 8 pounds. It may not be as fast as you wish it could, but long term.. What makes being 5. Well, now that you understand what the ideal weight loss rate is, this is going to make a ton of sense. What that means is, for every 3. GAIN 1 pound of fat. At the same time, it also means that for every 3. LOSE 1 pound of fat. If you consume 5. One Fact), you will end up creating a 3. And, since the ideal weight loss rate is 1- 2 pounds per week, this would put you right within range. Add some exercise in as well, and it will bring you closer to the higher end of that range. Making small, gradual adjustments to your calorie intake is the safest way to do it and the way it should always be done. This is another reason why the One Fact Adjustments call for 5. This is all for one purpose and one purpose only.. Not too slow, not too fast. Goldie Locks would be proud. Take a breath, stretch your legs, whatever. You just learned everything you need to know about weight loss. What follows from this point on is information you'll most likely either want to know, or definitely should know. Let's start with what foods you should and should not be eating.. This information isn't as much beneficial for weight loss as it is for general health purposes. See, technically, as long as the One Fact is happening (a caloric deficit), most people will lose weight no matter where their calories are coming from. That's just how it works. And, there is a lot more to your health than just your body weight. You can reach your goal weight and still be unhealthy because of the things you are and are not eating. Let's start off with what you should NOT be eating. Unless you've been living under a rock, you're really not going to be too surprised by what shows up.. They are. Foods containing any trans fat. Foods high in saturated fat. Foods high in sodium. Foods high in sugar. The thing they all have in common (besides tasting yummy) is that they are all quick and convenient. As if being the most common sources of the extra calories people consume wasn't enough reason to avoid them, there is a ton of scientific and medical research clearly showing a variety of health risks associated with diets high in these types of foods. Avoid it all as completely as possible. I personally never touch this stuff, and it is my opinion that most people would be better off (both for health and weight loss purposes) if they did the same. For now though, just know that this is the stuff NOT to eat. ![]() Looking for fun games to play with your six-month-old baby?
